What to expect: Learn to Play in Boston (Step 2)

A learn-to-play program is where adults new to hockey learn the basics in a group. Here's what that looks like at Greater Boston programs in our Boston listings.

Programs this guide is based on

Before you sign up: can you skate?

Programs differ. Warrior groups skaters by skating experience, and the same rink runs a separate Adult Learn to Skate. Crusaders' course is for players with little hockey experience or former players returning, and focuses on improving skating technique. Power Play's Watertown clinic welcomes all levels but is geared toward newer and novice players. None of these pages says it teaches skating from zero, so if you can't skate yet, start with a learn-to-skate class (step 1) or ask the rink.

What the sessions look like

  • Warrior: skating, puck control, shooting and passing through drills, personal instruction and small-area games.
  • Crusaders: skating technique and game fundamentals, split by ability when possible, with a scrimmage at the end.
  • Power Play Watertown: an 80-minute skills clinic plus scrimmage each week. Coaches try to give drills that challenge every level.

What to bring

Gear rules differ. Crusaders requires full hockey gear. Warrior's program includes skate rentals; its page doesn't list other gear requirements, so ask the rink before your first class. See the starter gear guide.

Format and cost

  • Warrior: seven 50-minute classes, Wednesdays or Fridays 8 to 8:50 PM. Ages 18+ (16 and 17 by inquiry). No price on the program page.
  • Crusaders (Winter 2026): six Tuesday practices at 9:15 PM starting January 6, then a scrimmage on February 17. $130.
  • Power Play Watertown (Fall/Winter 2026): Sundays 8:40 to 10:00 PM, September 20 to December 27 (15 weeks). $35 per week or $399 for all 15 weeks. Goalies free.

So among programs that publish prices, costs ran from $130 for a six-week course to $399 for a 15-week clinic.

What "graduation" means

There's no formal certificate. Crusaders ends with a scrimmage, and Warrior uses small-area games along the way. Afterward, the next step is a beginner league. For example, The Hockey Academy says its Woburn and Boxborough Novice/D leagues are designed for low novice (D level) players or those very new to the game.

Next: Boston beginner leagues (step 3).
